In 1938, Hugh C. Braly graduated magna cum laude from the University of Wichita with a bachelor’s in accounting. From there, he went to work for a small accounting firm, Lunsford & Barnes. After opening a Denver branch office for Bonicamp, Koelling & Smith, he became a tax partner with Peat Marwick & Mitchell (now KPMG LLP). Mr. Braly later retired in 1977 and joined Fred B. Anschutz to assist with the business operations of his family-owned companies. Mr. Braly also granted his services to help create the Anschutz Family Foundation where he served as a trustee and secretary. Even after Fred Anschutz passed away in 1993, Hugh Braly continued to oversee Anschutz family interests until his own passing in September 2000.
In memory of Hugh Braly, Sue Anschutz - Rodgers and the Anschutz Family Foundation established the Hugh C. Braly Endowed Scholarship. Mr. Braly’s wishes were that a scholarship in his honor would be awarded to a serious and dedicated Kansas student needing some encouragement. In honor of a man admired for his intellect, work ethic, commitment, unwavering ethics, and softhearted sense of humor, the Anschutz family’s gift is helping numerous students at a university for which Hugh Braly spoke so highly.
