One of the worst tragedies of college sports history happened on Friday, Oct. 2, 1970. A plane carrying WSU football players, athletic staff members and team boosters crashed at approximately 3 p.m. on a mountain near Silver Plume, Colo., while en route to Logan, Utah, for a game with Utah State University. Thirty-one people were killed.
Mr. Marvin G. Brown was one of the 14 players who perished in the crash. He graduated from Solomon High School in Solomon, Kan. He wore number 26 and was a running back for the team. There is a memorial placed at the crash site that reads, “As time goes by, memories fade. But we will never forget..."
The Marvin G. Brown Football Memorial Scholarship was created in his memory.
