US Citizens and Permanent Residents Graduate Application Requirements

Applications for graduate study are made through the Wichita State University Graduate School regardless of the program.  If you've already submitted a paper application and need to pay the application fee, you can do so through our online payment site.

Applicants to degree-bound programs must submit the following items by the published deadlines:

1. Application for admission
2. Non-refundable Application fee ($50)
3. Official transcripts from ALL colleges/universities previously attended, including community colleges, transfer institutions, and institutions coursework was taken for certification or personal enrichment.  Our office will attain copies of transcripts of your WSU work, and any work already a part of your WSU transcript.  All other transcripts must be sent to our office either through US Mail, or through and approved e-transcript vendor.  The mailing address is listed below for paper transcripts and e-transcripts.
4. Any departmental requirements.  It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure departmental requirements are submitted by the published deadlines.

Because of possible faculty and facility availability constraints, there are restrictions on the number of students admitted to some graduate programs, and these limits may prevent some qualified students from being admitted. Since departments having enrollment limitations generally take action on new applicants in March for Fall admission, early application is recommended. Preference usually is given to degree seeking applicants.

Non-degree admission statuses are available to accommodate qualified students desiring to pursue graduate credit for personal and professional reasons, and not necessarily interested in pursuing a graduate degree.  We offer three non-degree statuses:  Non-Degree Category A, Non-Degree Category B, and Graduate Guest status.

Non-Degree Category A:   This status is available for students who have already earned a graduate degree and wish to take additional coursework for personal enrichment, or to complete a graduate certificate.  The category is non-restrictive, meaning a student in this category could take any graduate level course for which he or she had the prerequisites, and/or departmental approval.  Admission requires:

1. Application for admission
2. Non-refundable Application fee ($50)
3. Official transcripts reflecting the award of your graduate degree.  If no graduate degree has been awarded, this category is still available, but applicants must meet the same requirements as those applying for the degree-bound status as explained above.

Non-Degree Category B:  This status is available to any student who holds a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.  This category is restrictive, meaning those in this category can only take courses numbered 799 and below for which he or she has the prerequisites and/or departmental approval.  This category is often used for students who are seeking to renew their teaching certification.  Admission requires:

1. Application for admission
2. Non-refundable Application fee ($50)
3. Official transcripts reflecting the award of your bachelors degree  OR proof of teaching licensure.  If you are licensed in the State of Kansas and provide our office with your SSN or Teacher ID, we will look up that information in the Certification database.  If you are licensed in another state, please provide a photocopy of your license, or official transcripts.

Graduate Guest Status:   This status is for students working on a graduate degree at another US institution who wish to take courses for ONE SEMESTER at Wichita State University to transfer back to their home institution.  The status is available for one semester only, and admits the student into a category that is non-restrictive, meaning a student in this category could take any graduate level course for which he or she had the prerequisites, and/or departmental approval.  Admission requires:

1. Application for admission
2. Non-refundable Application fee ($50)
3. A letter from your home graduate school certifying your standing in a graduate program at that institution.

Admission to most Graduate School statuses remains valid only if students enroll and complete at least one class as a graduate student within one calendar year of their admission semester.  The exception would be for programs that are professional and/or highly competitive.  In those cases, the admission is usually valid only for the semester of admission.  Students unable to attend that term would have to either receive written confirmation from the program that they could defer to a later term, or would need to reapply to be considered with the next applicant pool.
