HISPANIC AMERICAN LEADERSHIP ORGANIZATION (HALO)

History of WSU Hispanic American Leadership Organization

HALO was founded at Wichita State University in November of 1989 by Estela Garcia, then a senior majoring in Marketing. She had transferred from University of Kansas where she was an active member of KU HALO.

In 1990, through the hard work and vision of its leaders, HALO secured a scholarship program called the Hispanic American Leadership Award. The scholarship fund was established for high achieving and financially needy students attending WSU. In the fall of 1991, six students received this prestigious award. Through following years, the number of recipients continued to increase!

HALO continues to generate interest and enthusiasm among Latino and Hispanic-interested students at WSU and through the Wichita community. By becoming an organization whereby students of any background can participate, the Hispanic American Leadership Organization has become a very integrated part of WSU’s Student Life.
