Information For Parents and Students
Fall 2009 Opening
Fairmount Towers, Brennan Hall and Wheatshocker Apts. officially open for the 2009-2010 academic year at 10:00 AM on Sunday, August 16. Residents may check in any time after 10:00 AM on the 16th. Classes begin on Thursday, August 20.
Week of Welcome Highlights
Attend the Week of Welcome events. A schedule will be provided at check in. Some of the events planned include: an outdoor movie, ice skating, drive-in movie, laser tag, Cosmic Bowling and shopping trips.
Senior Staff
Fairmount Towers, Brennan Hall and Wheatshocker Apts. are directed by full-time professional staff members. These full-time directors are supported by graduate assistants and upper level undergraduates. Together they form our senior staff and are responsible for supervision of student staff, advising hall governments and the coordination of programs and services in their communities. These staff members have offices in Fairmount, Brennan and Wheatshocker. A senior staff member is on call each evening to respond to the needs of residents.
Community Assistants
Community Assistants (CAs), upperclass students chosen for their leadership abilities, live on each floor/building. Their major responsibility is to develop community on their floor or in their building. CAs provide leadership, plan educational programs, organize social events and are there to respond to any questions or problems that may arise. This may include answering questions about campus, helping residents who have difficulties with a roommate or suitemate, addressing homesickness, providing resources for students experiencing academic difficulties, and a variety of other things. A CA is on duty each night to assist residents.
Information Desks
All three of our residence halls and apartments have Information Desks where students and visitors "check-in", may pick up mail/packages, receive assistance, write a maintenance request or check-out a loaner key if they get locked out of their room. Information Desk hours vary by building, but if the desk is closed, a CA, Community Assistant is on duty to assist residents with lockouts and other emergencies. There is someone employed by Housing and Residence Life "on call" 24 hours-a-day.
Security
For the security of our residents, all of the buildings are locked and a key or card must be used to enter. In Fairmount Towers and Brennan Hall, Security Desks are in place to monitor visitors in the evening and early morning hours; a resident must sign in guests at the Security Desk.
The University also employs Cadets. Cadets are student employees of the University Police Department who make regular rounds in all buildings and parking lots in the evenings.
Safety and security depends on the residents and their guests following policies and procedures designed to promote community safety.
FERPA
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law designed to protect the privacy of a student's educational records. This law applies to all schools that receive funds through the U.S. Department of Education program. After a student turns 18, their information cannot be shared with anyone, including parents, without the student's written permission. We now include in our contracts the opportunity for the student to indicate to whom they would like their information released ahead of time. While the student is not required to sign the release, it can be helpful if they do so--especially if you are paying the bill.
