Your liability for fraudulent credit card charges changes October 1. Are you ready?

Does your business accept credit cards? Your liability for fraudulent charges will shift from the card issuing bank to you as the local merchant on October 1.

Your customers are receiving new credit cards. These smart cards include integrated circuit chips to reduce fraud. Smart Card technology, also called EMV short for Europay-Mastercard-Visa, is based on an international standard for authenticating credit and debit card transactions. The cards with the old magnetic strip and raised numbers will eventually disappear.

To protect your business from the liability of fraudulent charges, you will need a card reader capable of reading the chip and allowing customers to enter their PIN.

Beginning October 1, if your customer pays with a fraudulent EMV/chip card, and your business can only process magnetic stripe cards, then your business could be liable for that fraudulent charge. In the past, banks assumed this liability.

Making the switch requires replacing payment terminals, upgrading software and training employees.

JPEG Image    2015 Emerging Leaders Program to Start in April

Are You Ready To Take Your Business To The Next Level?
Contact: Michael Aumack (316) 269-6275

The SBA's Wichita District Office will host another Emerging Leaders program for business executives starting in early April. The Emerging Leaders Initiative is an intensive seven month training course that specifically focuses on the professional development of executives of '2nd stage' businesses poised for growth in Kansas.

The Wichita District Office is seeking a diverse group of 15 business owners or chief executives from varied industries, such as: retail, professional services, manufacturing, technology, etc., including family-owned businesses going through a leadership transition.

The initiative helps entrepreneurs focus on taking a step back from the day-to-day work to see the big picture. The Emerging Leaders Initiative program is considered a global leader in entrepreneurial and business development by The World Bank. It is a rigorous executive-level curriculum tailored to the needs of small business owners.

Participants will graduate the program with a 3-year growth plan that has been vetted by peers and business experts and is based on their individual business’ situation and goals. In addition, the participants will have access to a network of peers and business leaders who can continue to provide support and accountability as the growth plan is implemented.

As the class becomes a tight-knit group that builds trust and relationships over time, they will help each other think outside the box, and develop creative solutions with tangible action steps. The initiative is interactive, fun, and hands-on.

While the seven-month Emerging Leaders program is offered at no cost, the curriculum does require over 100 hours of classroom, reading, and project time per participant.

Over the course of 26 weeks (from April through October 2015), participants will attend 13 three-hour classes held every other week. Classes will take place on Wednesday afternoons, two times per month. Class time, date and location information will be released in the coming weeks.

A free one-hour information session about the SBA Emerging Leaders program will occur on Friday, February 13, 2015 from 3:00 - 4:00 PM at the SBA Wichita District Office, 220 W. Douglas Ave., Suite 450 (in Page Court building), Wichita, KS 67202. Please contact Michael Aumack (316) 269-6275 to reserve your seat.
