The WSU Shocker MINDSTORMS program at Wichita State University includes several events designed to encourage students of all ages (K-12 and adult) to explore, experiment, and experience STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) teaching and learning in a hands-on constructionist environment.
The annual Shocker MINDSTORMS Challenge is a collaboration among the Colleges of Engineering and Education at Wichita State University, and local industry professionals. The Challenge provides young students with the opportunity for practical application and exhibition of math, science, programming, and engineering skills, as well as promoting teamwork, dedication, and sportsmanship. Teams of fourth through eighth grade students from across the state of Kansas have the opportunity to complete Mission Challenges designed by WSU engineering students, and demonstrate what they have learned to professional engineers and educators in oral presentations, table displays, and notebooks. Sportsmanship and spirit are judged throughout the day to promote collaboration and teamwork. The first MINDSTORMS Challenge in 2001 had 20 teams participating. In 2009, 37 teams competed. In 2010, 36 teams participated (6 expert, 12 intermediate). The WSU Shocker MINDSTORMS Challenge is a community event and all are invited and encouraged to attend. This is the culminating event of many months of planning and learning by students, coaches, teachers, and volunteers at all levels. Please come join us as we celebrate their success.
The annual Fall Challenge is an informal fall competition that is open to individuals or teams of all ages. It is a casual day with mini-competitions including a Robot Race, a Sumo Competition, a Tug O' War, and a Wu Toss!
Robotics in the Classroom is an introductory graduate-level course offered in the College of Education where teachers work in groups to design, build, and program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS Robotics. Teachers learn the basics of design and programming and ways to introduce and manage robotics activities in a classroom environment. They learn how robotics can engage students in real world problem solving and collaborative learning while investigating STEM concepts at a concrete level.
The LEGO Robotics Summer Camp is a week-long day camp for 6th-8th grade students who want to learn how to build, program and LEGO robots. The camp is all "hands-on" and has sections and activities for both beginner and advanced users.
