The Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) envisions an all-inclusive Multicultural Campus Community of interdependent and interconnected cultures at Wichita State University. In this multicultural community, all its members will see themselves as ambassadors of human relations, whose individual and collective role is to promote, encourage, and support inclusiveness, respect, fairness, access, equity, and justice for all people. Wichita State University aspires to become an all-inclusive campus community where its citizens recognize themselves first, as members of one common race, The Human Race and second, as representatives of a particular racial, ethnic, gender, religious, political, or any other group.
The Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) will promote an all-inclusive global diversity at Wichita State University. Such community will be anchored in a campus climate that is inviting, welcoming, supportive, caring, and nurturing; one in which its citizens, regardless of their human and socio-cultural differences, can co-exist in harmony. In addition, the OMA will serve as a catalyst for promoting a "culture of collective responsibility" for the multiculturalization and globalization of Wichita State University. OMA is committed to supporting the overall mission of Wichita State University and will work collaboratively with the university communities to offer year-round all-inclusive, educational, cultural, social, and outreach programs for students, faculty, administrators and staff that are aimed at achieving Academic Excellence, Institutional Strength, and Campus Unity.
OMA takes pride in creating and maintaining connections with various communities outside of campus and within Wichita State University. OMA cosponsors many different events through these connections in order to provide the Wichita State community more variety, and better quality in multicultural events and programming. These events range from speakers and film showings, to award ceremonies and cultural festivities, each representing a small piece of the diversity displayed by the WSU student population. Over the last school year, OMA has been in volved with over 130 events both in and outside of the community. Through programs such as the Multicultural Student Mentoring Program and the Ambassadors for Multicultural Affairs, students are given the opportunity to learn more about diversity, being a minority at WSU, and the resources available to provide a more rewarding college experience. These are just a few examples of the programs and events OMA uses to fulfill its mission statement.
