This online course is for the graduate student preparing for practice as a lactation consultant. It provides an in-depth focus on the anatomical and physiological basis of lactation and breastfeeding. This course explores factors that impact maintenance of health during lactation and clinical decisions for disease prevention and addresses preparation for lactation consultant certification.

This course is a graduate level on-line course; therefore, reliable computer access is essential. This course is offered for 3 or 4 credit hours, with students enrolled in the 4 hour course required to complete a scholarly paper/project.

It is necessary to apply for admission to WSU graduate school prior to enrollment in the course. There will be additional fees for application to WSU. This course is accredited through the Lactation Education Accreditation and Approval Review Committee (LEAARC) sponsored by the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA). This course is tailored to the student seeking the professional credential as an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBLCE). Students should refer to the IBLCE website to determine the appropriate pathway for certification. The course confers 45 continuing education hours (5 E-CERPS and 40 L-CERPS), or 60 continuing education hours respectively. Additional hours to reach the total of 90 CERPS to sit for the IBLCE exam would need to be obtained through other lactation education offerings.
