Wichita State University’s Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) is a degree program available through the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. This degree is designed for students with well-defined career goals, offering flexibility for those who wish to customize their degree program, rather than pursue a specialized degree.

The BGS prepares you to enter a wide variety of occupations with the availability of multiple concentrations. The Field Major (BA) program at WSU is the BGS plus foreign language proficiency – which can give students a competitive edge.

Choose from two Liberal Arts online degree pathways:
• Bachelor of Arts: Field Major (BA) online: Requires foreign language proficiency
• Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) online: This degree option does not have a foreign language requirement.

General Studies online programs are available in a selection of pre-structured concentrations:

General Studies online program requirements

Both General Studies degree pathways include the WSU General Education and College of Liberal Arts & Sciences course graduation requirements. While in the program, students will need to complete 120 credit hours prior to graduation.

100 credit hours from LAS

Major Area Requirement: 36 credit hours (minimum)

  • 12 credit hours in concentration must be courses numbered 300 or above.
  • 18 credit hours in Primary LAS department.
  • 9 credit hours in Secondary LAS department.
  • 9 credit hours in Secondary OPEN department.

No foreign language requirement

94 credit hours from LAS

Major Area Requirement: 33 credit hours (minimum)

  • 12 credit hours in concentration must be courses numbered 300 or above.
  • 15-21 credit hours in Primary LAS department.
  • 6-9 credit hours in Secondary LAS department.
  • 6-9 credit hours in Secondary OPEN department.

You'll get the same level of quality instruction and challenging assignments as students do on campus. For most classes, your material, discussions and tests will be delivered online. Also, you'll be connected to a virtual academic community to support you throughout the program.

What do I need?

You'll need a computer with reliable access to the Internet, word-processing software, a working webcam and microphone. Good time management skills, motivation and comfortable using online tools to communicate with professors, counselors and classmates are also necessary.
