Orientation  Learning Outcomes

As new students complete their orientation experience, they should be able to demonstrate competency in the following areas:

  1. Manage the campus physical environment. Students should know which buildings to go to for academic and social services – including student parking lots, the library, computer labs, the Bookstore, Student Health Services, etc.
  2. Create relationships with students, staff and faculty members to be engaged in a meaningful way. It is proven when students have someone they can seek out for help, we have a better chance of retaining them and they are more confident and successful in and out of the classroom.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to locate information on academic policies and student and financial services. Academic policies include (but are not limited to) academic honesty and classroom etiquette. Student and financial services include (but are not limited to) disability services, counseling services, personal safety programs/services, financial aid and accounts receivable.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge about volunteer opportunities, internships and Cooperative Education and Work-Based learning placements. These topics are elements of all Orientation activities.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to understand and use technological resources. Students will learn about myWSU, BlackBoard, WSU website, and Email services during their Shocker Connection appointment and Orientation activities.
  6. Demonstrate awareness of co-curricular activities and leadership opportunities on- and off- campus. Students will be able to identify what organizations might fit their interests and needs and will know where to go to become connected with those organizations.
  7. Become aware of the impact culture has on individuals and of the educational services on campus related to diversity. This topic is an element in all Orientation activities.
