Project Lead The Way Kansas
Project Lead The Way (PLTW) is a pre-engineering program for high schools and middle schools that prepares students for careers in engineering and related technical fields. PLTW provides a fully-developed, project-based, curriculum that is free to participating schools. In PLTW classes, students complete hands-on activities where they apply and reinforce concepts in math and science while working as part of a team.
PLTW courses are currently offered in over 3,400 schools nationwide, and in many schools in South Central Kansas, including Arkansas City, Derby, El Dorado, Hutchinson, Newton, Wichita, and Winfield. PLTW's goal is to offer the program to students in 10,000 schools by 2015 (1/3 of all secondary schools).
Every PLTW teacher completes an extensive two-week training in each course they teach. School counselors receive training and ongoing support to advise students concerning their education and their career choices.
Costs for schools to implement the program include training teachers and counselors, and meeting minimum requirements for computers, software, and other equipment.
Each state has an affiliate university that provides teacher and counselor training, as well as guidance on PLTW implementations, and college credit for some PLTW courses. Wichita State University is the Kansas Affiliate University for PLTW.

Funding for 2010 implementations of PLTW is available for schools in the Sedgwick County area. Grant Applications will be accepted through January 31, 2010.
