 Placement Tests

Appropriate test scores or placement test results are required to take English and Math courses. The ACT test is also given on-campus. Contact the Counseling & Testing Center, 978-3440, for dates and times.

English

  • Students who score 19 and below on ACT-English will take ENGL 011
  • Students who score 20-26 on ACT-English will take ENGL 101
  • Students who score 27 and above on ACT-English may take ENGL 101H

Students who have NOT taken the ACT test will take the English Placement Test (cost, $4). TOEFL and EPE scores do not substitute for the English Placement Test.

Students not meeting the prerequisites for placement in ENGL 015, 100, 101 and 102 will be transferred to an appropriate level or administratively withdrawn.

College credit is not awarded for ENGL 011 and is offered only on a credit/non-credit basis.

Math

Appropriate ACT or Math Placement Test results are a requirement for enrollment in MATH 012 or 112, in addition to the course prerequisites. It is the student's responsibility to provide verification of ACT-Math scores or Math Placement Test results when requested.

With appropriate ACT Math and/or Math Placement Test results, and prerequisite coursework, students may enroll as follows:

  • ACT-Math 15 or less and no high school algebra will take MATH 007
  • ACT-Math 16-17 and o high school algebra will take MATH 011
  • ACT-Math 18-19 or Math Placement test results AND 1 year high school algebra or credit in MATH 011 will take MATH 012
  • ACT-Math 20 & above or Math Placement Test results AND 2 years HS algebra will take MATH 111
  • ACT-Math 20 & above or Math Placement Test results AND 2 years HS algebra and 1 year Geometry (note: MATH 111+123=MATH 112) will take MATH 112 or 123
  • ACT-Math 20 & above or Math Placement Test results AND 2 years HS algebra plus 1 year Geometry plus 1/2 year Trigonometry (all "C" or better) will take MATH 242 (or MATH 144 for Buisness majors)

MATH 011 may be used in place of one unit of HS algebra; MATH 012=2nd year of HS algebra.

College credit is not awarded for MATH 011 or 012 and they are offered only on a credit/non-credit grading basis.

Students not meeting the prerequisites for placement in MATH 012 or 111 will be transferred to an appropriate level or administratively withdrawn.
