Rube Goldberg


 Wichita State University Chemists have made a breakthrough in the lab. They have developed two super compounds that when mixed could release massive amounts of energy. The exact outcome of mixing the two compounds is unknown to the chemists, so they want to take extra precaution in this procedure. They have asked the SEEDS future engineers for their advice on how to set up the experiment.  The chemists have given the SEEDS future engineers the exact specifications as how the two compounds must be mixed, but it is up to us, to devise an original and ingenious way to mix the compounds from a safe distance. The chemists spent most of their budget in the developing phase of their research, so the SEEDS future engineers must make do with only the items currently in the lab. Due to the unknown effects of the mixture, the chemists have asked us to design a Rube Goldberg Machine that will allow them time to trigger a chain reaction that will eventually mix the two compounds and release the unknown potential.

A Rube Goldberg machine is an elaborate machine that is constructed with many simple machines working in a chain reaction to perform a simple task. If you have ever played the game Mouse Trap you have seen an example of a Rube Goldberg machine.  To properly construct a Rube Goldberg Machine from scratch takes a great deal of creativity and this activity will be highly emphasizing not "out of the box" thinking, but instead, "there is no box" thinking.
