Please be aware that there are incidents of H1N1 virus being reported on campus and in the Wichita area. Because it is important that we know the incidence of cases both from a campus management perspective but also for reporting to the Sedgwick County Health Department, all incidents should be reported to the Student Health Services office. Timely reporting is crucial. You can contact Student Health Services through a special e-mail address at wufluinfo@wichita.edu or call the office at 978-3620. Please see let Student Health know about potential H1N1 cases. You can download a form to fill out reporting potential H1N1 cases and see more information on who and when reporting should occur.
To help answer some questions that you may have regarding influenza we have put together an email address that will be manned by our nursing staff here at Student Health Services. This will give you a convenient way to ask questions and get answers. Please email us at wufluinfo@wichita.edu. Your questions will be answered between the hours of 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday.

Re: Novel influenza A (H1N1) virus infection
First, we want to assure you that your health and safety is our concern. We know that there are reports from various sources about what is happening with the novel influenza A (H1N1 or also known as the swine flu) virus infection. We would like to address how we plan to care for you as you begin classes this fall and keep you informed on what you should be aware of in regard to H1N1.
It is important for you to realize that you need to be responsible for using good respiratory and hand washing etiquette. This means covering your mouth and nose when you cough. New practices advise coughing or sneezing into the upper sleeve portion of your arm (at the elbow) to minimize germs being spread to your hands (please see the links below this letter for a flyer showing this method). Washing your hands is important after using a workspace, using the restroom, shaking hands with someone, before eating, etc. and can minimize the germs you come in contact with. Using a hand sanitizer can help also if you do not have a source of water and soap readily available to you. Student Health has some hand sanitizer.
This fall we will have the seasonal influenza vaccine available for students. Typically we begin giving our seasonal flu shots in October or November. More will be forthcoming as to dates and times of the seasonal flu shots. We are also hoping to receive an allocation of the H1N1 flu vaccine. We will notify our campus community of anything we learn about this. These vaccines are very important for you to consider receiving this year.
If you should develop flu-like symptoms please call your health care provider, or you may call our office (978-3620). Calling first rather than coming into our office will help us minimize the spread of this virus to others in the waiting area. One of our nursing staff can talk with you and advise you on what needs to be done. Talk with your professors/instructors also to determine what their policy is for being ill and attending class. We want to minimize exposure to healthy students as much as possible. Also consider your work stations or computer labs as these can be sanitized to help reduce exposure. Talk with those in charge of work stations and computer labs to see what is being done.
Lastly, if you should become exposed to or acquire novel influenza A (H1N1) virus infection and choose to come to Student Health we will follow the necessary guidelines to treat and care for you. You may also choose go to your own health care provider. Communication is most important and we will rely on you to keep us informed if you do go to your own health care provider and test positive for the virus.
We look forward to a healthy and productive 2009-2010 year!

To limit the spread of viruses , please call 978-3620 to make an appointment or to ask questions.
We would like to address how we plan to care for you as you begin classes this fall. Please take a look at the procedures that SHS has laid out for the preparation and management in the event of pandemic influenza at Wichita State University.
This protocol outlines the management of any Influenza strain in the event sustained human-to-human transmission results in an epidemic or pandemic.
