Are YOU Ethical?

Are YOU Ethical? is a project targeted towards the youth of America. We will be presenting middle school students with different situations that can be ethical and illegal or unethical and legal. Consequences of unethical behavior in school, the workplace, and in society are also a point that we will be discussing through our presentation. This project is going to address the Ethical behavior in our education system that is carried over into the workplace.

Current Events Seminar

Current Events Seminar recognizes the need for student awareness. Between school, work, and play, it's difficult for students to find the motivation to read the newspaper and business periodicals on a regular basis. SIFE has recognized a need, developed a curriculum, found an instructor (Associate Dean Dr. Jim Clark), and recruited students. Current Events Seminar will help relate the theories and abstract practices learned in class to real-life situations. In a round-table format, students will learn to analyze and discuss business news in an appropriate manner, departing from the common lecture-style courses.

Enron and You: Local and Lasting Consequences

Enron and You: Local and Lasting Consequences examines the consequences of the corruption in Houston several years ago. The event consists of two parts: showing Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room and a subsequent panel discussion by local accounting experts. They will relate the film and Sarbanes-Oxley Act in terms that students can understand so that we are aware of the changed business environment upon entering the workforce.

Go Green for Greenbacks

This project meets the environmental sustainability criterion by promoting the personal responsibility of individuals. This is achieved through the creation of a competition between student organizations on campus where the winner not only gets bragging rights and the knowledge that they have helped contribute to sustaining the environment, but also receives a portion of the money earned through recycling back, as does second and third place. Groups who wish to participate can begin collecting items for recycling at any time, and those items will be collected every other Saturday in the Devlin Hall parking lot at 1 p.m. Winners will be determined by the total weight of items collected. If it is not possible for a groups recyclables to be brought to Devlin Hall’s parking lot or there are any other questions please contact a SIFE member.

Money$mart Camps

The Money$mart project is one of Wichita State SIFE's most successful legacy projects. Now in its fifth year of partnering with the Kansas Credit Union Association (KCUA) and the Kansas State Treasurer's Office to put on MoneySmart Camps, the WSU SIFE team helps to educate middle school students so that they can make smart financial decisions. SIFE members actively facilitate lessons from a 5-lesson criteria, teaching Kansas students about concepts such as:
• Money and Choices
• Saving
• Goal Setting
• Interest
• Budgeting
• Credit

In addition to creating opportunities for students to be successful in making money-related choices, SIFE members also get to be positive role models for the kids, building relationships and setting a good example for them. This year, the SIFE team looks to facilitate six 1-day MoneySmart camps in the Wichita area. This project meets the Financial Literacy and Success Skills criteria.

Pen Pal Project

The Pen Pal project is an ongoing program that started a few years ago. The objective of this project is to connect college students with younger students in the Wichita community. By having interactions between the students, we are educating them about the endless possibilities of the future they should be prepared for. Letters will be exchanged on a weekly basis. We will serve as mentors to these students. By giving them an opportunity to interact with college students, they will gain the knowledge of life in college.

Currently, we are working expanding the project to internationally.

The International Pen Pal project will allow students from Wichita State University to interact with students from Sun Yat-Sen University in China. The pen pals are students who are currently learning English and will allow this project to have an international reach. Emails will be exchanged on a weekly basis so that we can learn about each others culture while helping them practice their English.

Project Greenlight

This project is designed to meet the environment sustainability criterion by helping businesses reduce their energy usage while cutting their costs. SIFE members will give businesses a presentation showing how switching to compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs) is not only good for the environment, but will also benefit their bottom line through a reduction in energy costs. Help in making the change to CFLs will also be provided for businesses.

Public Service Announcement Project

For the 3rd year in a row, the SIFE team is participating in the MPAA Anti-Piracy Competition. Each team has the opportunity to develop a 60 second video combating piracy. Last year, the Wichita State SIFE team's PSA went into the Finals. This year, we are working hard to develop an even better PSA to inform people all over the world that piracy is illegal and the consequences from piracy. You can obtain our previous year's footage on youtube if you would like to see our SIFE team in action.

Take Charge Project

TakeCharge is a project regarding financial illiteracy that targets the college student population. Our goal is to educate the Wichita State University student body on the basics of the financial world in order to form a basis of financial knowledge that can be built upon after graduation. We reach students through our website and various campus activities. This includes:

• Credit cards
• Car loans
• Interest rates
• Pay day loans
• Budgeting skills
