Undergraduate and Graduate - SPORT ADMINISTRATION
• KSS 112 Introduction to Sport Administration: (3 credit hours) Introduction to the discipline of sport administration and its vast array of career opportunities (since the sport industry represents the eleventh largest industry in the U.S.).
• LAS 150U Career Network Experience: (1 credit hour) Meets identified needs of special audiences.
• KSS 210 Practicum--Sport Administration: Integrate course work with planned and supervised professional experience for a minimum of 15 hours per week. Prerequisites: 2.50 GPA, junior standing, and admission to the College of Education. (3 credit hours)
• KSS 426 Sport Public Relations: (3 credit hours) Focuses on the application of public relations principles in a sport-related setting. Significant attention to media relations with specific topics including media guides and publications, handling statistics, and crisis management.
• KSS 428 Sport Finance: (3 credit hours) Introduces the sport administration student to financial challenges, financial statements, financial planning, and related issues within sport organization.
• KSS 447A Internship in Sport Administration: Culminating activity for undergraduate students in sport administration. Students spend the equivalent of full-time employment in the appropriate agency for a total of at least 520 hours. (12 credit hours)
• KSS 447B Internship in Sport Administration: Second internship experience for students in sport administration; takes place in a different setting than KSS 547A. Students spend the equivalent of full-time employment in the appropriate agency for a total of at least 520 hours. (12 credit hours)
• KSS 461 Legal Aspects of Sport and Physical Activity: (3 credit hours) Focuses on the concepts of tort law, constitutional law and statutory law as they relate to the sport professions. Emphasizes liability-related issues as they impact sport administrators, exercise professionals and teachers/coaches of physical activity.
• KSS 465 Psychology of Sport: (3 credit hours) Explores the observations, descriptions, and explanations of various psychological and physiological factors that influence diverse aspects of sport and physical activity.
• KSS 466 Marketing Sport and Physical Activity: (3 credit hours) Introduces tools and concepts used to market sport and physical activity. Emphasizes marketing strategies that applicable to the sport administrator, teacher/coach and exercise professional.
• KSS 475 Issues and Trends in Sport Administration: (3 credit hours) A basic understanding of the developments, trends, and social processes that explain the widely popular sporting experiences in society today.
• KSS 520 Sport Tournament and Event Management: (3 credit hours) A detailed account of the structural designs, mathematical calculations, scheduling principles, procedures, and thought processes involved in the organizing and conducting of sport tournaments and events.
• KSS 525 Sport Facility Management: (3 credit hours) Focuses on the various aspects of facility management, such as mission development, funding and budget, site selection/planning/design, floor surfaces, risk management, equipment purchase and maintenance, and personnel management.
• KSS 770 Psychology of Sport - An in-depth analysis of the psychology of motor learning and its implications for the teacher/coach. (3 credit hours)
• KSS 781 Cooperative Education Field Study (1- 8 Credit Hours) - Provides the graduate student with a field placement which integrates theory with a planned and supervised professional experience designed to complement and enhance the student's academic program. Individualized programs must be formulated in consultation with appropriate graduate faculty. The Plan of Study for a graduate bound student must be filed before approval of enrollment for cooperative education graduate credit. May be repeatable for credit with a limit of 8 hours counting toward the graduate degree. Offered Cr/NCr only.
• KSS 800 Recent Literature in the Profession - Survey and critical analysis of research and other pertinent materials in the field. (3 credit hours)
• KSS 801 Leadership and Management in Sport: Initial introduction into the administration of sport in public schools, institutions of higher education, and commercial and professional sport organizations. Learn about the various components of sport administration by reading appropriate materials and entering into dialogue with practicing administrators. (3 credit hours)
• KSS 802 Leadership & Ethics in Sport: The course is designed to give individuals an understanding of the various issues and concepts relating to ethical decision making in sport administration settings. (3 credit hours)
• KSS 803 Sport Marketing: This course focuses on the application of marketing principles in a sport-related setting. Specifically, the course will address content areas such as corporate sponsorships, ticket sales, broadcast agreements, promotional events and direct marketing in the sport entertainment, sport participation and sporting goods sectors of the industry. (3 credit hours)
• KSS 811 Sport in Society: Impact of sports on american culture, with focus on competition, economics, mythology, education, religion, ethics, professional sports, sports and minorities. (3 credit hours)
• KSS 822 Communication in Sport: A sport organization's success is largely dependent on the degree to which it can effectively communicate with key constituents. this class addresses a variety of communicatio-related topics including public relations management, image, media relations and community relations. (3 credit hours)
• KSS 828 Financial Management in Sport: This course is designed to provide the prospective sport manager with an overview of the major financial issues concerning the sport industry. The concepts of resource allocation and financial management will be examined and applied to the problems faced by sport and leisure organizations today, primarily at the college and professional levels, with some attention to commercial recreational enterprises. (3 credit hours)
• KSS 835 Legal Issues in the Profession: Acquaints the graduate student with legal research and the role that law plays in governing the sport and fitness industries. Actively research various theories of law and how they affect the nature of sport, fitness activity, the participants, and consumers. Investigates the basic concept of negligence utilizing illustrative cases from sports, physical education, and fitness activities. Also focuses on specific situations regarding injury and subsequent lawsuits. (3 credit hours)
• KSS 836 Legal Issues in the Profession II: Will provide students with the knowledge, understanding, and application of how the following legal issues influence the sport industry. Specific content addressed includes sport governance, collective bargaining, labor and antitrust law, criminal law, constitutional law, intellectual property rights and legal research. In addition to the above content knowledge and application, case studies and class discussion will focus on the enhancement of problem solving skills and prudent managerial decision-making.
• KSS 847 Internship: Internship is selected areas of specialization in sport administration. Prerequisite: department consent. (6 credit hours)
