Because of various events that have occurred on college campuses, there is heightened concern about students in our classrooms. Often, we see different behavior and immediately are concerned that student may be the next threat to our campus. It is important to remember that behavior you may characterize as "strange" doesn't not equate to imminent danger.
Our campus has developed the Care Team that reviews concerning behavior of students, faculty and staff. If you have a concern, please bring it to the attention of the Care Team.
Gary Pavela has written and updated a memo to faculty (PDF) to help faculty and staff identify behavioral concerns. It has been refined and augmented for use on our campus. The cited information, presented in a question and answer format, includes abbreviated excerpts from recent issues.
We hope this information will help you in dealing with students in your class who may be troubled.
