Shocker Leadership Academy

Wichita State University’s Shocker Leadership Academy (SLA) is a leadership academy for select high school juniors. Participants will engage in monthly leadership-development activities and exercises held at Wichita State University and in the Wichita community. Students will benefit by enhancing their leadership skills, resume and experiences. The program is sponsored and coordinated by the WSU Office of Admissions.

Who are SLA participants?

Certain Wichita-area high schools were contacted and asked to identify top student leaders within the junior class. Counselors selected students who they felt were strong leaders within the junior class and provided their names to the Office of Admissions. All SLA participants hold or have held leadership positions in various student clubs, athletic teams and class governments.

What types of activities will SLA students participate in?

WSU will host one SLA event each month during the school year. The events are all designed to be leadership-enhancing activities. SLA participants will hear from local and national community leaders, successful business people and be able to interact with WSU’s student leadership. Events will occur on WSU’s campus and at special venues in the Wichita community. The academy will culminate with a recognition ceremony in April where eligible SLA graduates will receive a certificate recognizing their achievement.

What is expected of SLA participants?

SLA participants are expected to attend as many of the official SLA activities as possible. SLA participants are asked to register in advance to attend SLA events, be attentive and engaged during SLA activities, and to serve as positive role models for other high school students. Most SLA events will occur in the evenings or on the weekends. SLA participants who attend four (4) of the six (6) events for the school year will be honored as Shocker Leadership Academy graduates in April.

Does this commit SLA participants to attend WSU upon high school graduation?

It does not. This is an experience designed specifically to boost leadership skills for a select and hand-picked group of high school juniors. Involvement in SLA does not commit a student to attending Wichita State after graduating from high school. However, it is likely that SLA participants will gain advanced and additional knowledge of WSU admission and scholarship information simply by being affiliated with the program.
