Gloria Garfinkel Obi 1 20012002 oil and acrylic on shaped canvas 72 14 inches by 25 inches

Throughout her career, New York artist Gloria Garfinkel (b. 1929) has drawn inspiration from the vivid designs and unexpected color combinations of Japanese fabrics and woodblock prints. The Obi series of shaped paintings, which takes its name from the beautifully patterned and elaborately folded traditional Japanese sash, represents a recent phase of her ongoing, systematic experimentation with color and pattern.
