On June 18, 2014, the Kansas Board of Regents accepted the proposal moving WSU Classified employees to University Support Staff, joining the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, Emporia State University, Pittsburg State University and Fort Hays State University. This decision localizes administrative responsibilities and provides for greater flexibility and more cooperation between the university and USS employees.
Everything in the proposal from WSU’s Alternative Service Committee was granted except for the request to increase the accrued leave time to 6.77 hours for all USS employees.
The Board determined that allowing all USS employees to earn 6.77 hours per pay period is contrary to the Regents policy and a prior opinion by the State Attorney General. However, it should be noted that this is consistent across the Regents system.
The Alternative Service Committee was unaware of this policy and regrets that increased leave time could not be approved.
Nevertheless, new USS employees to WSU are granted almost 12 days of vacation a year, accruing at 3.7 hours per pay period.
USS moved forward, realizing that everything else requested was approved. This was still a positive move and it was addressed by the Board of Regents as such.
