Recognition Given to Veteran Students

We are proud of two of our Veterans who recently were 2009 Early PhotoEssay Competition Award Winners – Category: Special Veterans Recognition. The national TRIO Quest photo essay competitions provide students with the opportunity to exercise their skills by combining both text and images along with research and creativity to produce a personal essay to share. Both Veterans are participants in Veterans Upward Bound-Wichita State University (VUB-WSU) program. “Bill and Brownie” by Thomas Junkins Jr. tells of a close bond between a hunting dog and the man he chose to be his friend. After that first meeting, Brownie’s loyalty and retrieving skills were reserved only for Bill. “Tragedy on the High Seas": A Carrier Fights for Life” by Charles Magee recounts the tense drama of a fire on the USS Kitty Hawk, a naval aircraft carrier. The fire endangered the entire ship but the sailors’ performance of duty in the face of this difficulty saved the ship and her crew. Both photo essays were judged and placed in the category of Post Secondary Finalists. In addition to the award, they also received medals and a digital camera. Our congratulations go to Chuck and Tom!
