This Summer, Veterans Upward Bound will be holding several  basic courses designed to sharpen your academic skills. Below is a list of the  classes we will be conducting from Monday, June 8th 2009.

COURSES  DESCRIPTION

 

 I. ENGLISH COMPOSITION:

A course  designed to improve the student's ability to think and communicate clearly and critically, emphasizing the writing process.  This course  offers instruction and practice in the techniques of good writing, correlated with the reading and analysis of various types of factual literature.The course will also cover methods of preparing to write as well as editing techniques.

 

II. MATH COURSES

(We will administer a Math assessment to you in order to determine which of the math  courses is appropriate for you at this time.)

1. This course provides the instruction of algebraic concepts that can be applied to real-world and mathematical situations.   The content includes:   the structures and properties of real numbers; data analysis concepts and methods; exponents, absolute value, square roots, radicals, and scientific notation; various solution strategies; coordinate geometry and graphing; various ways of analyzing and expressing patterns, relations, and functions; and the use of variables and algebraic expressions.   Also inclusded in this course:   operations with polynomials; factoring and solving polynomial equations; graphing and solving quadratic and exponential functions; radical expressions and equations; triangles and other trigonometric ratios; and statistics and probability.

2. This course provides the foundation for further studies in Algebra in order to solve problems and to evaluate expressions through real-world applications.   The content covered includes the following:   learning the tools of Algebra; addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of integers; solving equations; solving two-step equations; factors and fractions; rational numbers; and ratio, proportion, and percent.

 

III. SCIENCE COURSE

Science (BIOLOGY):  In this course  students will study what living organisms are, and the organisms similarities and differences. The goal of this course is to provide students with the conceptual framework, factual knowledge, and analytical skills necessary to deal critically with the rapidly changing Science of Biology.

 

IV. COMPUTER WORKSHOP

Introduction to Computers: We are offering this useful course so students will learn the basics like  setting up an email account and begin sending and receiving emails. Study the MS Office products such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Learn how to do research on the Internet. Students will be guided through a basic understanding of how to use blackboard and other website related to their course work.
