The WSU Concert Band is one of two concert bands at WSU. This ensemble includes both numerous music majors and non-music majors. The membership of the Concert Band includes graduate students and undergraduate students from every college, school, and department from across the campus. Numerous non-music majors participate in the Concert Band, thereby contributing to the musical success of the band. The enrollment of the Concert Band is usually 85-members.
While the Concert Band requires a placement audition for seating, the goal of the Concert Band is inclusive – that is to accommodate all non-music major students that desire to continue their instrumental music experience in a university setting. To this end, the Concert Band, with the permission of the Director of Bands, will accommodate non-music major students with scheduling issues on a limited basis. Non-music major students who wish to participate in Concert Band but have a scheduling issue are encouraged to contact the Director of Bands – many scheduling issues can be resolved. The Concert Band is where many students that want to play in band but are not majoring in music find their outlet for musical creativity.
The Concert Band performs both standard and new band repertoire. The Concert Band has achieved regional and state recognition with performances at the College Band Directors National Association Southwestern Division Conference (1996), and the Kansas Music Educators Association Professional Conferences (1999, 2001, 2003, 2005).
The Concert Band meets at the following times:
