Shocker Sound
 Basketball Band

Support Men's and Women's basketball at WSU by joining the Shocker Sound Basketball Band! The WSU basketball season usually runs from November until March. Students are eligible to travel with the band to basketball tournaments based on availability and number of games attended throughout the school year. Each band member also receives a stipend per game that is disbursed in January for Fall Semester games and May for Spring Semester games.

Participation and Stipends

Qualified students may participate in either or both the Men’s and Women’s Shocker Sound Basketball Bands.  Each band member receives an honorarium per game of approximately $30 in the fall, and $35 in the spring. Band members will also receive an honorarium of $20 per rehearsal. Honorariums typically are disbursed in January and May.  Shocker Sound is an extra-curricular activity with no University credit offered for participation. Shocker Sound performs for all Men’s and Women’s home games, including games during Winter Break.

There are approximately 20 Men's Games and 20 Women's Games each basketball season.  The season typically begins in October and concludes in March.  Shocker Sound travels to tournaments when the teams are invited to participate.

Shocker Sound Personnel and Instrumentation

Due to the NCAA and NIT Tournament Regulations, the total number of Shocker Sound personnel is limited to 30-playing members per game.  However, the band roster includes more students than allowed per game.  During the fall semester the personnel roster includes approximately 50-60 students.  Personnel are rotated in and out of the band to give more students an opportunity to participate in Shocker Sound and to accommodate the availability of each student’s schedule.

At the beginning of spring semester the Shocker Sound is re-auditioned selecting the most proficient players.  Spring semester personnel must make a strong commitment to playing the majority of the games since the regular season is followed by tournament play requiring a cohesive and experienced band.

Eligibility, Auditions, Pre-Season Rehearsals and Membership Priority Consideration

In order to be eligible for Shocker Sound a student must be enrolled at WSU each semester in a minimum of one course.

It is highly recommended and to the advantage of students desiring to be members of the Shocker Sound Basketball Band to enroll in Concert Band.  This is because Concert Band students play their instruments throughout the academic year keeping playing skills proficient as well as improving skills.  While Concert Band enrollment it is not a requirement for Shocker Sound eligibility, in the case of an audition tie a student participating in Concert Band is generally given preference.

Auditions typically are held the last week of September.  Students interested in auditioning for Shocker Sound are encouraged to attend the Pre-Season Rehearsals.  To receive information about Pre-Season Rehearsals and Auditions, complete the on-line Audition Information Request Form on the WSU Bands Webpage: www.wichita.edu/bands

At the beginning of spring semester Shocker Sound is re-auditioned selecting the most proficient players to participate in the band that may travel to tournaments should either or both men’s and women’s teams be invited. In the case of audition ties, the following guidelines are considered in breaking ties:

                  (1) Music major or music minor
                  (2) Member of the Concert Band, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, or a Jazz Ensemble
                  (3) Seniority (students previously members of the band)

Audition Results

Audition results will be posted on the Band Board located outside the Bands Graduate Assistants’ office, DFAC Room C114.
