Institutional Review Board (IRB)

The Institutional Review Board is responsible for reviewing research involving human subjects and enforcing the requirement of informed consent to assure that the rights and welfare of subjects who participate in research conducted by WSU faculty, staff and students are protected and that the University is in compliance with federal requirements (Title 45 Code of Federal Regulations, Part 46).

The IRB meets on the fourth Monday of the month. Please submit all documents to the IRB inbox at least 2 weeks before the meeting (deadline dates below) to allow time for administrative review.

**Notice** The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and fifteen other Federal Departments and Agencies have issued final revisions to the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects (the Common Rule – 45CFR46). The Final Rule is set to go into effect on January 19, 2018.  According to DHHS, the revised rule implements new steps to better protect human subjects involved in research, while facilitating valuable research and reducing burden, delay, and ambiguity for investigators.
Some of the changes that will affect the type of research typically conducted at Wichita State University include the following:

  • Due to expanded exemption categories some studies that would have previously been categorized as expedited will now be eligible for exemption. New application forms will be posted in advance of the effective date.
  • Additional elements are required in the informed consent document. A new consent template will be posted on our website in advance of the effective date.
  • Some expedited studies will no longer require annual continuing review. Investigators will be prompted to complete a 1 page status report instead. You will be alerted at the time of initial approval if your study will need continuing review or a status report. Regardless, you must still submit amendments for any changes proposed to the study.

Submission Freeze – In order to transition to and implement the revised common rule, there will be a freeze on new study submissions from December 18, 2017 - January 18, 2018. Please plan accordingly. Studies that were submitted before December 18 will continue to be processed as well as any amendments or continuations for existing studies that are needed during this time. New studies submitted before the submission freeze that are not approved by January 18, 2018 will be withdrawn.  The study will need to be resubmitted using the new forms and will be reviewed under the new common rule criteria.
IRB’s across the country are awaiting additional guidance from the Office of Human Research Protections (OHRP) on how to implement these changes. More information will be posted as it is received in the IRB office. Training sessions will also be offered as the effective date approaches.
