Orientations for New Nursing Students

The NAS continues to host a welcome reception each semester for the new undergraduate and graduate students entering the WSU nursing program. These events have been well received by the students, School of Nursing and WSU administration. All alumni are welcome and encouraged to attend. Please contact the alumni association or the School of Nursing for dates of the upcoming semester’s reception.

Nursing Student of Excellence Awards

Each semester, the NAS presents an award to a nursing student who is completing their studies at WSU in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. The candidates for this award must excel in service, leadership or heroism, and maintain a GP of at least 3.0. Students are nominated for this recognition by the faculty. Winners for the Undergraduate program were Kathy Winslow (Fall ’04) and Kaleena Bauck (Spring ’05). The Graduate program winners were Nancy Ballinger (Fall ’04) and Nellie Smith (Spring ’05). Congratulations to these deserving nursing graduates!

Distinguished Alumnus Award

Each year at our annual meeting, the NAS recognizes one of our alumni with an award. This award is given to a graduate of the WSU Nursing program who has set her/himself apart in one of the following categories:

• Nursing leadership scholarly activities

• Care delivery systems advances

• Clinical advances

• Promotion of the image of nursing contributions to education

• Other forms of service political/legislative representation of nursing

The NAS did not receive nominations for this award this year. Please contact the alumni association if you wish to nominate a person deserving of this award.

Many of the alumni photos hanging on the walls of the WSU Nursing Department are fading as time passes. The NAS is asking for assistance from anyone interested in helping to preserve the history of the WSU Nursing Program. Please contact Juanita Tate, chairperson of the Department of Nursing or the alumni association if you are interested in helping with this project.
