A small Waorani boy goes down the trail to the river; his pet night monkey's eyes are tightly closed against the daylight. The book contains the story of the spearing of missionary pilots in  1956, as told by his grandfather, one of the killers. On the way back from preparing his garden plots, a young man encounters and kills a jungle cat.  The cats are killed because they prey on the settlement's chickens and pets and because their skins can be sold for cash.
