This data bank of astronomy questions has been prepared to give students in introductory astronomy courses at Wichita State University (both 195G and 395G) an idea of the type of short answer questions that may be given on examinations and quizzes in those courses. We suggest that you use these questions as a review or self-test as you prepare for a quiz or examination. One technique that might work for you is to:

Select the topic (and subtopic) from the menus provided on this page and the following pages.

Choose a question from the list presented that is relevant to the discussions we have had in class, and think about how you would answer it if it appeared on a quiz or exam. If you need to look up some information for your answer, do so but close your notes or book as you try to frame your final answer. Remember that you will not have these resources in front of you in class.

Click on the blue "answer" button following the question to see if you have included all the key ideas in your response. Think about the differences between your response and the sample response. Why are they different? How could you have better anticipated what was requested to make your answer more complete or accurate. Remember that a complete answer needs to explain why an idea is correct, not just state it.

Use the back button of your browser to return to the list of questions when you are ready to consider another question. Work on only one question at a time so you don't get confused, or overlook something.

We hope you find this information useful. Good luck as you prepare for your next test!
