Personal Protection
  • Safety Goggles must be worn at all times when in the Lab.
  • NO Sandals, flip-flops, open-toed or backless shoes are allowed in the lab.
  • NO shorts, sleeveless shirts , short skirts in the lab.
  • No short pants that do not reach the tops of your shoes in the lab.
  • No eating or drinking in the Lab.
  • Long hair must be pulled back in the lab

Emergency Response
Fire Drill
  • If you are in room 110 or 111 and the fire alarm sounds, exit though the left door of the Lab, continue out the two sets of double doors to exit the building.  DO NOT go to the CAC !  Please stay in front of McKinley or between Jardine and McKinley.
  • If you are in room 121, exit to your left.  A door will close to cut you off from the rest of the building. Proceed out the center door in the middle of the building. Please stay in the front of McKinley until the all clear sign is given.

Emergency Exits
  • Rooms 111 and 110 have a door in the back that joins the two rooms this  is an emergency exit.
  • Room 121 has a back door to the outside. This is an emergency exit only.

  • Fire Extinguisher- Located by the front  door  of all undergraduate labs.
  • Two different kinds Located in the department—***
  • Eyewash / Safety Shower – Yellow pole, with triangle handle  located next to the door in the undergraduate labs

Emergency Response
General Information
  • Please notify your Teaching Assistant immediately after any Injury, Fire, Explosion ,Chemical Spill or other Laboratory accident, no matter how small.
  • For minor injuries (cuts, burns) a first aid kit is located in the stock room.

  • In case of an emergency situation , the campus police department will be contacted for assistance in escorting the sick or injured person to Student Health services

  •  An accident report must be filled out and kept on record.
  • Accident Reports are found in the stockroom and must be completed and returned to the Stockroom, immediately following an Accident.

General Laboratory Information
  • Read ALL Labels carefully.
  • Label all vials, test tubes and beakers.
  • Write out the compound NAME not the formula.
  • DO NOT return unused Chemicals to the Reagent Bottles.
  • Never  pour unused chemicals down the drain.

General Laboratory Information
  • Dispose of broken glass in BROKEN GLASSWARE BOXES only.
  • Do Not Leave an on-going experiment unattended.
  • Keep your lab space Clean.
  • Store book bags under counters in the back of the lab.

General Lab Information
  • If instructed to smell a chemical - do so by fanning the top of the bottle .
  • When Diluting acids always add Acid to Water.

Waste Management
General Chemistry
  • With the exception of one 212 lab and one 103 lab, the single  large white waste container is the Inorganic hazardous waste container.
  • The Teaching Assistants for each Lab will instruct you on the proper waste container to use.

  • No Student is allowed in the Lab unless  the TA is present.

Before Leaving
the Laboratory
  • Clean your Lab area .
  • Wash your hands .
  • Make sure gas lines , water traps and vacuum lines are turned off.

Final Note
  • Any disruptive behavior in the Laboratory that disturbs the academic environment or infringes upon the physical or emotional health or safety of other persons – including (but not limited to) physical or verbal abuse of faculty or fellow students, is prohibited.  The consequences of disruptive behavior will range from ejection from the classroom or lab, to administrative withdrawl from the course.
