In policing, a debate exists on the value of traditional policing versus community policing. This article examines this debate and the possible effects it may have with implementing community policing. There is an explanation of philosophy for traditional policing and community policing. With the difference of philosophies, there are bound to be conflicts in implementing community policing. One of the key ingredients to successfully implementing community policing, according to the author, is the patrol officer. Typically, the patrol officer is reluctant to accept community policing and follow the necessary process for implementation. The article then prescribes methods of addressing and solving problems associated with community policing and patrol officers.
