Based on the biblical tale of Susanna and the Elders, Floyd sets his American opera in the Appalachian Mountains, using musical idioms, ranging from simple folk tunes to soaring Puccini-like melodies. Susanna is a young girl living in an isolated area with her brother, Sam. When Olin Blitch, a charismatic preacher arrives in town, the local church elders set out to find a place to baptize the congregation. Unseen by her, they spy Susanna bathing naked in the creek. The men report her to the community, who denounce her as a slut. Preacher Blitch pays a call on her, and harshly demands that she repent. Susanna refuses, saying she has done no wrong. Blitch seduces her and is horrified to find that she is innocent. When her brother finds out what has happened, he shoots Blitch dead. Olin Blitch is one of Samuel Rameys signature roles. This production coincides with Mr. Rameys 2013-14 residency. He will co-direct this production with Marie King and also portray Blitch in alternate performances on October 18th & 20th.
