Two Wichita State University Choirs, Concert Chorale and A Cappella Choir, kick off their performance calendar with an eclectic program that explores the ideas of inspiration and dance.
Concert Chorale delves into the topic of inspiration, performing works inspired by events, places, objects, and feelings. The program includes Jubilate Deo by Benjamin Britten, a work written for the choir at St. George’s Chapel of Windsor Castle, the weekend residence of the Queen of England. This spirited work was inspired by the chapel’s gothic architecture, and, for this concert, is performed in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Britten birth. Other works include Hosanna to the Son of David by Renaissance master Orlando Gibbons, a piece inspired by a divine power, and Randall Thompson’s beloved The Road Not Taken, a setting inspired by the poetry of Robert Frost that celebrates human uniqueness. Also featured on the program is Eric Whitacre’s Water Night, a stunning and evocative setting of an Octavio Paz poem that speaks of being inspired by dreams.
A Cappella Choir “dances its way into the fall concert with a musical experience in world culture that features folk songs from Africa, Russia, Israel, Romania, and Appalachia. The choir enters the stage with a traditional Cameroon Processional Song and exits the stage with an Irish folk melody converted into the moving anthem, Lord of the Dance. In between, there is a Romanian folk dance song, Chindia, in which the choir makes sounds that imitate instruments, a traditional Hebrew melody, Dance the Hora, and a theatrical production of the joyous Russian Picnic. Highlighting the program is the multi-metered Dance by American composer David Conte.
