Efforts under way to help the community, soldiers abroad
4:38:22 PM CDT - Thursday, November 18, 2004
Two employee groups are heading up efforts at WSU to help others during the holiday season.
The Unclassified Professional Senate is once again asking faculty and staff to Stuff the Bus and help brighten the holidays for people in need. The campaign is sponsored by B98-FM, Optima Bus Corp. and Wichita Bus Transit, and proceeds benefit Catholic Charities Harbor House and the YWCA Women's Crisis Center. For a list of suggested items, go to http://webs.wichita.edu/?u=UPSENATE&p=/stuffthebus.
Donated items can be dropped off in boxes in Ahlberg, Clinton, Grace Wilkie, Jabara and Morrison halls. The donated items will be used to help fill the bus when it stops at Wichita State from 9:45-10:15 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 2, in the turnaround by Morrison Hall.
The Classified Senate is asking members of the WSU community to join them in sending care packages to a unit of Fort Riley soldiers headed to Iraq. The senate received an appeal from the unit NCO to show support for these troops by sending holiday cards, letters and packages.
If you are interested in taking part in this project, please contact Margaret Ford at email@example.com for a mailing address for the unit in Iraq. The unit's readiness NCO will distribute the packages to the unit's 299 soldiers.
Janice Holtsclaw, who is helping head the effort, said to keep the package contents very basic to avoid problems with mailing restrictions in Kuwait and Iraq. Individuals and groups will be expected to pay their own mailing costs. The WSU Postal Services staff are well-informed in mailing overseas packages. Boxes can be mailed from now until Dec. 1. To help track the project's success, those participating should also e-mail Ford with the number of packages they sent, Holtsclaw said.
After the holidays, the senate's community service committee will try to get individual addresses of unit members to the WSU employees interested in continuing their support of the troops during their deployment.
