Serving a need

When Kate Watts-Harkness was asked if family, friends and others could send her items, she replied, "I don't really need anything but it would be great if you want to donate clothing for our wounded troops.”
Uniforms are often cut off of soldiers receiving medical care, and no replacements are available at the hospital so donated sweats, T-shirts and flip-flops are provided instead.
That was a very typical response for her friend and colleague to make, said Debbie Kennedy of the Alumni Association.
"She is just so grounded in her mission,” Kennedy said.
Kennedy had just received a journal entry from Watts-Harkness one day when alumnus David Nygaard, a military veteran, stopped by her office to ask about volunteering efforts. After hearing about the WSU faculty member's request as she serves in Iraq, Nygaard organized a drive in Newton that resulted in 10 boxes of donated clothing that Watts-Harkness recently received.
To donate items, mail them to Capt. Kathryn Watts-Harkness, 332 EMDG/EMDOS/ICW, APO AE 09315-9997.
