Materials:vinegar, baking soda, balloon, 20 oz. plastic
pop bottle, candle, matches
Many of us have done the ol' vinegar & baking soda trick. The two combine to make carbon dioxide gas (CO2). You can use the fact that CO2 is heavier than air to do some cool stuff.
Get your 20 oz pop bottle, the balloon, and the vinegar & baking soda. Put one of the two ingredients into the pop bottle (your choice as to which), put a little bit of the other into the balloon. Attach the balloon to the pop bottle without mixing the ingredients.
When you are ready, mix your stuff and watch the reaction! The balloon fills up. What is in the balloon? If you didn't mix too much of the vinegar & CO2 you will find that the balloon is filled with air and the bottle is filled with CO2. CO2 is heavier than air so as it forms it pushes the air up. You can pinch off the balloon, remove it from the bottle and try it out on a candle flame. If it is slowly released at the flame and is air it will not put out the flame! If it were CO2 then it would put out the flame.
So if you did things properly, the air in the balloon will not put out the flame, the air in the bottle will. Slowly poor the air from the bottle out over the flame (make sure not to poor any of the liquid). It will extinguish the flame nicely.
