Medical Emergencies:
When immediate medical care is required by a person as a result of an
accident or sudden illness, the University Police Department should be
notified immediately by telephone. The University Police
dispatcher will send a patrol officer to the location of the injured or
ill person and will contact the Wichita-Sedgwick County Emergency
Communications dispatcher for an ambulance. A second patrol
officer may be sent to meet and escort the ambulance to the correct
location. Emergency Communications dispatches a fire department
E.M.T. trained rescue unit along with an ambulance;
therefore, paramedic personnel also will respond.
Transportation:
If it is determined that the injuries or illness are such
that the person may be transported by automobile without additional
injury, a University Police Department patrol vehicle may be used in
the event that other sources of transportation are not available.
In all cases, the decision to transport the person to a hospital in a
University Police Department patrol car must be made by the patrol
officer. In no case will an unconscious person be transported in
a University Police Department patrol car.
Crimes:
In witnessing a potentially criminal act, stay calm, be observant and
obtain as complete a description as possible. Important features
of the criminal to look for are hair and eye color, hair style,
clothing, scars and tattoos. Also note the method and direction
of travel, car license plate number, make, model, year and color, and
type of weapon used, if any. Upon witnessing a crime or attempted
crime, notify University Police Department immediately. Time is
an extremely important factor and can mean the difference between an
apprehension or the successful escape of a criminal.
If robbed, don't resist, especially if the robber is armed. Try to stay calm and obtain as complete a description of the robber as possible. Then notify the University Police Department as soon as possible.
Fire Emergencies:
In the event of a fire, call the University Police Department.
The dispatcher will need to know the name of the building, floor, and
room number where the fire is located, the object that is burning and
the name of the caller. It may be necessary to leave the fire
area before calling. Do not stay in a burning room to call; use a
neighboring telephone.
Pull building alarm system and leave the building immediately. When fire fighters arrive, direct them to the fire.
Environmental Emergencies:
The reporting of emergency situations that occur during the night
begins with the patrol supervisor. The patrol supervisor reports
the situation to the party responsible for making a recommendation as
to closing part or all of the University facilities. The
recommendation will be submitted to the University President by 4:30
a.m.
Reporting Unsafe Conditions:
When coming across a situation or condition that poses a threat to the
safety and well being of persons using or passing by or through the
facility in question, report it to the fire and safety officer at
extension 5531. The officer will investigate the situation and
recommend corrective action to the appropriate authorities. After
normal business hours, report to the University Police Department
dispatcher.
Inclement Weather:
Inclement weather should be addressed in accord with Section 20.03
of the WSU Policies and Procedures
Manual.
Should an emergency situation occur at any of the outreach centers, the Director of the Center should contact the Director of Physical Plant. The Director of Physical Plant will then follow the procedures above.
Crisis Management:
Crisis situations should be handled in accord with the Crisis
Management Plan set forth in Section 20.02 of the WSU Policies
and Procedures Manual.
