18.07 / Jurisdictional Authority of University Police Department

Purpose:
The purpose of this statement is to set forth the jurisdictional authority of the Wichita State University Police Department.

Preamble: 
The Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 requires that certain universities have policies on the authority of campus security personnel. 

Policy Statement:

1.  University police officers have the power and authority of law enforcement officers as defined and set forth in K.S.A. 22-2401a (4) and in K.S.A. 76-726, as amended.

2.  The University Police Department cooperates with local, state and federal law enforcement authorities as necessary and required, but currently maintains no operation memorandums of agreement for the investigation of crimes.

Implementation:
This policy shall be included in the WSU Policies and Procedures Manual and shared with appropriate constituencies of the University.

The Vice President for Administration and Finance shall have primary responsibility for publication, dissemination and implementation of this University Policy.

Effective Date:
January 1, 2009
