7.16 / Retirement

Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS):
Paycheck reduction for employees eligible for the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System is administered by OHR.  Employees in classified positions requiring 1,000 or more hours of work per year become members of the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System after the completion of one year of service.  Participation is mandatory and a contribution of 4 percent of gross pay is required.  Purchase of service credit and/or forfeited service is allowable under specified circumstances.  Ten years of service credit are required for vesting.  Information about retirement options and withdrawal rights is available from OHR.

Kansas Police and Fire Retirement System (KP&F):
A state employee, employed as a University Police Officer, is eligible to affiliate with the Kansas Police and Fireman System (KP&F) if the position has been designated as a police officer, is not seasonal or temporary, and requires one thousand hours of work per year.

Membership is compulsory for all eligible employees.  Member contributions are fixed by statute at 7 percent of all salary, wages, and fees.  Employer contributions for the first year are set at 16 percent.  Thereafter employer contributions are made at actuarially determined rates.  Employer contributions remain with the system at the time a member terminates and withdraws.  If an employee is receiving retirement benefits through KP&F, they are not eligible to participate in KP&F.

Normal retirement age is:

    Age 50 & 25 years.
    Age 55 & 20 years.
    Age 60 & 15 years.
If you have service credit with KPERS, it may be used to count toward the service requirement; however, the service will not be included in the computation of the KP&F Monthly Benefit.  A separate benefit will be computed for KPERS service.

KP&F members are provided:

    Disability benefits (service-connected).
    Disability benefits (not service-connected).
    Death benefits (service-connected).
    Death benefits (not service-connected).
    Retiree death benefit is $4,000.
Compensation for Accumulated Sick Leave (KPERS & KP&F):
Retirees are eligible for compensation of accumulated sick leave as follows:
10 years of service and accumulation of 800 hours = 240 hours paid.
15 plus years of service and accumulation of 1000 hours = 360 hours paid.
25 plus years of service and accumulation of 1200 hours = 480 hours paid.
