Welcome to the Wichita State University. We understand the questions that may be building up in your mind, as once even we had been through the same phase. These are a few issues most students are curious about.
When you land….
Don’t you people worry. Once you mail us your journey details, we will be there
at the airport to pick you up and just to make you feel homely you may like
staying with seniors until your accommodation is decided which will be a matter
of 2-3 days after you arrive. Regarding money matters you can get demand drafts
either on your name or on the university’s name for tuition fee, a few travelers cheque’s
and carry a few dollars around 300-400 for immediate expenses when you arrive.
Accommodation
Accommodation is not a problem here in Wichita. Most of the
Indians stay just across the University. It’s hardly a 5 minutes walk from
these apartments to the University. People share apartments and it turns out to
be a fairly economic deal. You also have the option of living independently in
university dorms.
Financial Aid / Funding
This question is what almost everyone asks us in their mails. Students are
usually funded by their professors only if they have any research going on. So
what one can do is keep mailing the professors of your related fields, let them
know what you are good at, send them documents of your past work and don’t
forget to attach your resume with a good cover letter always. There are also
graduate positions outside the departments such as maintaining labs, working at
front desks, and many other such openings which depend on availability. But as
we have seen most of them manage their finances here usually after the first
semester. As soon as you arrive here in Wichita you need to be very active in
looking for jobs.
What to get along….
You get almost everything here in the United States but we would advice you to
get things like spices, pickles, tamarind, etc… as they are a bit expensive
here. You can get more of formal clothes as they are twice as expensive as in
India. Basic set of utensils would be enough. Do get a set of your syllabus book
of your Bachelor’s degree which you may require for waiving any pre requisites
if any. Books are expensive in the United States so it is advisable to look at
our website and your coursework and get books accordingly.
We wish you all the best and hope to see you at the Wichita State University
soon.
