A Sisterhood built on love and friendship...
Purpose
Kappa Delta Chi is a sisterhood built on four ideals: Unity, Honesty, Integrity and Leadership. Established by four college women, Kappa Delta Chi Sorority, Inc. is an organization that strives for academic excellence and provides service to the campus, community and the Hispanic population. All members of Kappa Delta Chi are leaders with high moral standards and faith.
National History
Four women at Texas Tech University came together to create an organization that would promote leadership and unify Hispanic women. In February 21, 1987, the idea was created by Cynthia Garza, Nellie Flores, Irene Montoya and Melissa Montoya. They were advised by Marlene Hernandez and Mary Reeves on how to establish such an organization on campus. The name Kappa Delta Chi was chosen and the constitution was written. The offices were filled and the ideas of love, friendship and Christianity were incorporated. On April 6, 1987, Kappa Delta Chi Sorority was officially recognized at Texas Tech. The state of Texas later recognized Kappa Delta Chi as a service-based, non-profit corporation on September 25,1997.
Chapter History
The initial idea to have a Latina sorority at Wichita State began in 1997. The WSU Hispanic American Leadership Organization (H.A.L.O.) helped organize and produce a group of girls that were dedicated to the establishment of a Latina sorority. On November 8, 1999 the first meeting was held at WSU. Many options for a Latina sorority were investigated; however, the decision was made in December 1999. Kappa Delta Chi was chosen for being a service sorority and containing the principles of Unity, Honesty, Integrity and Leadership. On January 28, 2000 the interest group became a recognized student organization at Wichita State called Senoritas Latinas Adelante. We became a colony on May 14, 2000 with 10 members and one alumni advisor. The Charter members were: Alicia Newell, Lori Florez, Delia Garcia, Viviana Macedo, Jennifer Rodriguez, Mireya Serna, Ana Serna, Elisa Salas, Haydee Serna and Carolina Santander. Perla Rodriguez was the Alumni Advisor, Elia Salas the Counselor Advisor and Martha Sanchez the Senior Advisor. Our first service projects as a colony included volunteering at Wichita Head Start, Park Elementary, Big Brothers Big Sisters Latino Bowl, area hospitals and centers, Latino Vote 2000, Wichita Kid Festival, USHLI Grass Roots Leadership Development Program, Cinco de Mayo Fiesta, Students of Color Day, Si Se Puede Day, Interfest and the 2nd Annual Hispanic Heritage Festival co-sponsored with WSU HALO, SLB, and SDMA. On September 24, 2000 the first Latina Sorority was established at Wichita State University...the Alpha-Alpha Chapter of Kappa Delta Chi was born!
