Using the KSTEI Problems and Scenarios

  

The Problems/Scenarios in the KSTEI Database are classified by topics. To help teachers find items appropriate for their needs easily, we list all possibilities in a checklist so that you can indicate your choices effortlessly.

  1. We suggest that you start all your searches with the appropriate grade level. Most of the problems/scenarios indicate a range of grade levels, but when you click on one grade level, all items which include that grade level will be listed.
  2. You will probably wish to indicate either a mathematics or a science content area next. Again, clicking on the appropriate content area from a composite list will expedite your search.
  3. An alternate method of selection would be to search on either a mathematics or science standard. Be aware that the KSTEI database is classified by the 1999 version of Kansas Mathematics Education Standards and the National Science Education Standards.
  4. You may wish to select a Kansas Strategic Technology from your area of Kansas or one that involves a specific Strategic Technology. The entry checklists give you these options.

Each problem/scenario has one or more accompanying hints that you may wish for students to take advantage of by clicking on the "Hint" button on the problem screen. The hints do not tell students how to work the problem, but do give them ideas and/or encouragement to try a method that they may not have thought of.

The complete solution (for QUANTITATIVE problems), not just the answer, for each problem is also a part of the database. However, the solution section cannot be immediately accessed from the problem/scenario screens. The solutions are available to teachers by clicking on the Login link below on this screen. Teachers will need to register by completing a short identification section and choosing a password. Once a teacher is logged in, the number of the problem/scenario for which a solution is desired can be entered on a form and the solution will be retrieved from the database.
