Special Announcements

June 23, 2008 - FYI - I cannot yet post grades to the MyWSU system.  But I have posted your final grade score in Blackboard for you to see.  Have a great summer.

June 19, 2008 - I changed the final day's assignment.  You will have a homework assignment (#7) due tomorrow rather than a write-up.

June 18, 2008 - I hope you had a great time today. I know I learned many things from the speakers.

Several points to note heading into our last day. First, there is NO homework assignment for class tomorrow. I decided that since I am lecturing, I'd give you a break. THERE IS, HOWEVER, A WRITE-UP DUE FOR THE SPEAKERS FROM TODAY. Please make sure you discuss both speakers, letting me know what you learned from the speakers.

Finally, there will be one last write-up due on Friday based on my lecture Thursday. Think of it as your last exam for the class.

See everyone tomorrow morning at 8:00 in our regular classroom.

June 12, 2008 - FYI.  We will be touring a vacant house tomorrow as a part of our appraisal discussion.  I suggest comfortable, casual clothes.

June 10, 2008 - Just a couple of comments.  First, on your daily write-ups, try to avoid simply listing everything mentioned in class.  Instead pick some key ideas that you found interesting and discuss what your learned.  If you need to go longer than one page, that is fine (just don't go more than two pages).  Also, make sure that you are careful to proofread your work.  Poor grammar, writing style or lots of typos will cause your grade to be lower.  You will also receive a low grade if it appears that you simply dashed it off quickly without giving it the time and thought you should.

Second, I STRONGLY suggest you look at the mortgage loan application tonight and begin to fill it out.  If you have any questions, we can then discuss them tomorrow morning.

See you in the morning at First American at 8:00 a.m.

June 9, 2008 - Lots of updates for today.  First, don't forget that you have two assignments due tomorrow morning.  The first is Homework #1 on Brokerage, Agency and Sales.  The second is the write-up about what you learned from class today.

Second, if you have a property that you would like us to use on Friday for our appraisal field trip, let me know ASAP.  Please give me the details of the property (address and any other relevant info).  Remember, we will do a tour of the property, so you have to be OK with the class doing a walk-through of the property.

Finally, the bookstore is willing to buy back your text books for the next day or two with your receipt.  If you bring it with you tomorrow, you should be fine.

See you tomorrow morning at 10:00 sharp.

June 8, 2008 - Oh boy, I am sorry.  There was a mistake in our text adoption this summer and we ended up with a different text than I intended.  Glancing through it a week ago, I thought it would be OK, but the Jacobus text is simply terrible.

I have posted an alternative text that I encourage you to get for your personal library.  But it is probably too late for what we want to do this term.  Instead, I am posting my old lecture notes (see the Lectures page).  This, coupled with my PowerPoints and other materials should be enough to let you prepare for our field trips and do the homework assignments.  We will discuss this in class further in the morning.

Note that I have posted notes for my lectures tomorrow.  Feel free to print them off if that will be valuable for you.

June 6, 2008 - Well, the website is mostly ready for next week.  The basic outline of our course schedule and the syllabus are taking shape.  We will have class in our regular room on Monday starting at 8:00 a.m.  I will give you more details for the class then.

June 5, 2008 - I had a question about whether you need to buy the text for this class. The answer is "yes." We will be taking a number of field trips over the next two weeks. There will be a lot of material from the text over which I I will not lecture. Instead, I will give you (daily?) homework assignments that you will complete based on readings from the text. The next day we will discuss these homework assignments and then use our field trips to illustrate the concepts from the homework. You will NOT be able to do the homework or succeed in the class without the text.

Also, make sure your WSU e-mail account is configured so that you receive me e-mails.  With the short window for this class and the large number of off-campus meetings we will have, you will need to receive e-mails from me promptly.

May 29, 2008 - Welcome to Principles of Real Estate.  During this class  you will gain a richer understanding of what real estate is and how the discipline of real estate permeates every aspect of your life.  In addition to learning basic business and life skills, you may find the career of your dreams in real estate.

I will use this website to post homework assignments, study guides, and general class information.  In addition, you can access homework assignments and exams from past semesters in the homework section section of the site.

This web site is still under construction.  I am radically restructuring the class to take advantage of our two-week, half-day structure.  None of the information here should be considered final until our first class meeting next week.  Nonetheless, I thought you might appreciate getting a feel for what we will be doing this semester.

I would value your ongoing feedback on the course.  This form is completely anonymous, and your comments will help me make this course more interesting and valuable for you.
