Special Announcements

November 11, 2009 - The notes from Monday and the sample Assisted Living Case report are posted in the Downloads section.

October 14, 2009 - The notes from today are posted.  Remember they have the assignments for Monday.

October 12, 2009 - I have posted the SmartBoard notes from today and I have scanned the Book of Lists page for assisted living facilities.  These are now posted on the Downloads page.

Remember to bring a complete list of assisted living facilities in the Wichita area with you to class on Wednesday.  In addition, you should come with your recommendation on how to estimate the total number of beds in the area, do a newspaper search of possible new assisted living projects in the pipeline, do some background reading on assisted living facilities, and come with recommendations on how to estimate demand.

October 7, 2009 - As we discussed in class, the rest of the semester will involve working on three case studies together as a class:

  1. Estimate the long-term market potential for downtown housing (condominiums in particular, but also apartments) by price/income range.  That is, once the market for downtown housing becomes fully mature, how many owner- and renter-occupied units can Wichita support in different price ranges? How does this compare to existing supply and what gaps exist in the market?
  2. Evaluating the market potential for an assisted living facility in the Wichita MSA. We will provide an estimate of the total demand for different types of assisted living space in the Wichita metropolitan area, the supply of existing and prospective assisted living facilities, and a recommendation about whether the market can support a new facility, what type of facility it should be, how large it should be, and where it should be located.
  3. Determine the market potential for a small- or mid-size retail center near the WSU campus and, if sufficient demand exists, recommend a size, location and other characteristics for this center.

The market defining story notes we discussed in class are posted on the Downloads page.

Also, I have revised the syllabus to reflect the grading procedures we discussed in class.

For Monday, please do research on assisted living facilities and begin coming up with ideas about how to estimate demand for these facilities.  If you can derive some preliminary figures, that would be great but it is not necessary.  Mostly I want you to give serious thought to how you might come up with hard figures.

September 25, 2009 - I have posted the oral and written assessment forms I will use this semester, along with the Barton School's assessment rubrics.

August 26, 2009 - The e-book is now available at http://ebooks.primisonline.com

August 18, 2009 - Well, the schedule is still very tentative, but the website is basically ready for the semester.  Note that the e-book may not be available for a week or so.  I'll let you know as soon as I have word that it is up on the website.

August 17, 2009 - Welcome to Market Analysis for Real Estate and Business Decision Making.  I will use this website to post information and resources for this course.  When in doubt about when an assignment is due or when an exam will be given, the information on this web site will be the final authority.  (Don't forget to press your "refresh" button to make sure you get the latest info.)
