Plasma membrane
made up of lipids that form a bilayer
the greasy ends are inside the bilayer, while the polar heads make up the outsides of the bilayer
the bilayer is also called a unit membrane
the plasma membrane is about 50% protein and 50% lipid
the proteins act as transporters and sensors
the plasma membrane is a semipermeable barrier
transport across the membrane is controlled by the cell

Prokaryotic cells
prokaryotes have no nucleus
prokaryotes have no membrane-bound internal structures
prokaryotes have no organelles
prokaryotes have cell walls outside of their plasma membranes

Eukaryotic cells
eukaryotes have a membrane-bound nucleus
eukaryotes have membrane-bound organelles, like mitochondria and chloroplasts
eukaryotes are more complex than prokaryotes

Bacterial cell shapes (morphology) cocci are spheres bacilli are rods there are other shapes too
