Module Objectives - Acute Low Back Pain

Following completion of this module the student will be able to:

1. Differentiate between mechanical and nonmechanical causes of low back pain
2. Identify "red flags" for potentially serious causes of low back pain.
3. Discuss appropriate neurological examination designed to identify nerve root compression, peripheral neuropathy or spinal cord dysfunction.
4. List the indications for cost-effective use of diagnostic imaging in the evaluation of low back pain.
5. Outline appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic management strategies for acute mechanical low back pain.
6. Counsel patients about the ways to influence the rate of recovery from low back pain and on the likelihood of recurrence.
7. Describe when to refer the patient with low back pain.
