Case Study - Common Dermatological Conditions
Correctly diagnosing common dermatological conditions requires a methodological approach. A thorough history is important noting family history, allergies, and occupation. The lesion description, including location, onset, duration, symptoms, previous treatment, should be obtained. Many dermatological conditions look similar but require different treatments. Also keep in mind that systemic diseases may present as a dermatological condition.
Prior to beginning the case studies, we recommend that you do some review:
Anatomy of the Skin (Full Course Option Only)
Common Dermatological Terminology - (Full Course Option Only)
This site offers an excellent review of common terminology (select Index) as well as a brief pictorial quiz (select Quiz and enter any three numbers) .These case studies are representative of a number of common dermatological conditions encountered in primary care. Each case presents a patient scenario and asks for a diagnosis. Within each case are links to additional information about that condition, current management of the condition, additional images, and patient information. The cases are self-contained and may be entered in any order. Click on a patient below to begin the case study. Be sure to complete the Diagnosis within each case before viewing the Additional Information or Management & Education concerning the condition.
We would like to thank Mr. Mike Redman, Emergency P.A., and Chris Moeller, M.D., for the use of case photographs from their practice.
