The University Admissions and Exceptions Committee
2006-2007 Annual report
The University Admissions and Exceptions Committee (UAEC) is currently comprised of the following members: Rajiv Bagai (LAS Math/Natural Science), Frances Clark (Education), Rachel Crane (Chair; University Libraries), Matthew Goad (Student Government Association), Krishna Krishnan (Engineering), Xiufen Lu (LAS Humanitites), Michael Palmiotto (LAS Social Sciences), Tim Quigley (Health Professions) and Suzanne Tirk (Fine Arts). The representative post from the school of business is currently vacant. Additionally non-voting members include a vice president from the Division of Student Affairs and a representative from admissions.
The committee generally meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month except in August and January, months beginning each semester, when the number of petitions requires additional meetings. Additionally, June, July, March, November and December require only single sessions due to a reduction in the number of petitions.
Meeting agendas are comprised of petitions ruled on by college-level admissions and exceptions committees. The university level committee reviews the college-level rulings on qualified admissions, readmission following dismissal, late drop requests, and other exceptions to established rules.
A notably large number of petitions arrived before the committee in January 2007 due in part to problems generated by the Banner system. This appears to have increased the committee work load for both the college level and university exceptions committees.
In the spring of 2007, copies of the UAEC guidelines and procedures were re-distributed to all college administrators. After some inquiry from the colleges and committee members, the committee feels that this document should be revisited by the Faculty Senate in the near future, as the document is over ten years old, as interpretations and practices appear to have varied through the years, and as this document does not appear to have been incorporated into other online documentation of faculty policies and procedures.
Respectfully submitted,
