Proposals from the General Education Committee

April 10, 2006

The General Education Committee I proposing several changes to the general education program. These are in response to issues that arose in the last NCA visit and in response to this year’s review of the Issues and Perspectives Courses by the committee. The nature of the changes is as follows:

1. A definition of an Issues and Perspectives Course.

2. A simplification of the rule concerning the taking of I & P courses.

3. Student outcomes with regards to the basic skills components.

4. A new goal addressing diversity on a global scale.

5. Dropping the word "basic" from existing goals (to address criticisms that arose last year over the goal statements).

The committee and the General Education Coordinator believe these to be high priority changes and would like to see these approved this academic year. These have already been presented to the LAS College Council. We would like to get on the senate agenda as soon as possible and then get approval from the general faculty.
