WSU - ICAA Missed Class Policy

Wichita State University athletic schedules will be developed so as to minimize the number of classes a student-athlete must miss due to competition.  As a member of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Wichita State University is required to satisfy competition requirements each year.  In this regard, schedules will be developed to ensure that student-athletes will miss as few classes as possible while also meeting these competition requirements.  The Director of Athletics will review annually every sports schedule to determine the feasibility of the travel schedule.  Each semester, the Director of Athletics will review the number of missed classes for each sport with the Faculty Athletics Representative and members of the ICAA Board of Directors.  This policy is intended to guide the scheduling of athletic competition and does not in any way supersede the policies or requirements of instructors of classes in which student-athletes are enrolled.

        1.  Student-athletes will take into consideration their practice and competition obligations when scheduling classes in order to minimize class absences.

        2.  Student-athletes are required to attend all class periods except for those they are unable to attend due to competition-related activities.

        3.  Wichita State University student-athletes will not miss more that 20% of the regularly schedules class sessions each semester due to competition-related activities.  Any athletic schedule  which requires a student-athlete to miss more that 20% of the regularly schedules class session must be approved by the sub-committee of the ICAA Board consisting of the faculty members serving on the ICAA Board.

        4.  Student-athletes who will miss class due to participation in intercollegiate athletics will provide advance notice of absences to their instructor and will be responsible for submitting all assignments on time and that advanced arrangements will be initiated by the student-athlete for any tests/quizzes that will be missed.

        5.  Off-campus competition will be strongly discouraged during any final examination period that concludes a semester.  The only exception will be Missouri Valley Conference post-season and NCAA championships competitions.  However, every reasonable effort will be made by University representatives to influence the scheduling of those events so they do not conflict with Wichita State University's final examinations periods.

        6.  Student-athletes shall not miss regularly schedules classes for any practice activities (e.g. Shocker Madness, Fall World Series, Intersquad Scrimmages or regular practice sessions).    No class time shall be missed for practice activities except when a team is traveling to an away-from-home contest and the practice is in conjunction with the contest.

        7.  For away-from-home competition with same day travel, student-athletes shall not miss any classes prior to 30 minutes before the scheduled time of departure.

        8.  For home competition, student-athletes shall not miss classes prior to two hours before the scheduled competition.
